Wuling Hongguang Mini EV
The Wuling Hongguang Mini EV is a genuine phenomenon, a tiny, deliberately basic electric city car that briefly outsold Tesla in China during 2020 and has gone on to sell well over 1.9 million units, cycling through five design generations in just six years. It’s now in its fifth generation, launched in early 2026 with a redesigned exterior and interior at an unchanged, still remarkably low starting price.
Measuring just 3,268mm long, it’s genuinely tiny by modern car standards, offered as either a three-door or five-door hatchback, with a rear-mounted electric motor producing around 27 to 40 hp depending on version. Battery options span 9.2kWh to 13.8kWh, giving a CLTC range of up to around 205km, entirely sufficient for the short urban trips it’s designed around, and deliberately basic equipment, some entry versions have historically skipped features like air conditioning to keep costs down.
The Wuling Hongguang Mini EV starts from around 32,800 yuan in China, roughly £3,600 converted, rising to around 55,800 yuan for the best-equipped, longest-range version. It has not launched in the UK, and remains focused on China and select other Asian and Latin American markets.
