Firefly Overview

Firefly is NIO’s third brand, sitting alongside NIO itself and the mid-market Onvo, and it’s a genuine departure from what NIO is best known for. Rather than large, luxury, tech-laden SUVs, Firefly builds a single small hatchback, deliberately positioned as a “boutique compact EV” rather than an ultra-budget runabout, priced and equipped to compete with cars like the MINI Cooper Electric and Renault 5 rather than the cheapest EVs on sale.

The car itself doesn’t actually have a separate model name, it’s simply called the Firefly, the same as the brand. That’s a deliberate choice similar to how MINI relaunched as just “MINI” rather than a specific model, and it gives the whole brand a tight, singular focus, at least for now, on doing one small car well rather than spreading across a wide range from day one.

Firefly launched in China in 2025 and had sold over 26,000 units there by October that year, a strong start that helped NIO nearly double its year-on-year monthly sales. It expanded into Europe soon after, going on sale in the Netherlands and Norway, priced deliberately below the EU’s tariff threshold for Chinese-made EVs. Right-hand drive production began in late 2025, with Singapore confirmed as the first right-hand drive market, ahead of a UK launch confirmed for 2026 and a similar 2026 launch planned for Thailand. A refreshed version launched in China in April 2026, with styling tweaks, more standard equipment, and a retuned motor, at unchanged pricing.

NIO Firefly EV Charging

As with several other recent Chinese entrants to the UK, Firefly inherits NIO’s signature battery-swap technology, though whether NIO builds out swap stations to support it in the UK specifically remains to be seen.
