Tank Overview

Tank is Great Wall Motor’s dedicated off-road brand, home to genuinely serious body-on-frame 4x4s built to compete with the Toyota Land Cruiser, Land Rover Defender and Ineos Grenadier rather than the more mainstream SUVs sold under Haval and GWM Ora. The Tank 300 actually started life in 2020 as a model within GWM’s upmarket WEY line-up, before proving popular enough to be spun off into its own standalone brand in 2021.

The range has grown since, with the larger Tank 500 sitting between the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado and full-size 300 Series in overall size, and both models have expanded well beyond China into genuine right-hand-drive markets including Australia and Malaysia, where the Tank 300 in particular has become a strong seller against established off-road rivals.

Tank has not launched in the UK. Industry analysts have described a UK launch as “not out of the question,” though nothing has been officially confirmed, and pricing would likely need to land somewhere in the £55,000 to £60,000 range to position it sensibly against the Land Cruiser, Defender and Grenadier once local import costs, right-hand-drive conversion and dealer network investment are factored in.
